Reel in the Action: New Smyrna Beach Fishing

Trip Overview

Get ready for an afternoon of non-stop fishing action on the beautiful shores of New Smyrna Beach! Captain Chris from Reel Healin Outdoors knows these waters like the back of his hand, and he's pumped to show you the best spots for hooking into some real beauties. This 4-hour trip is perfect for anglers of all skill levels – whether you're a seasoned pro or just getting your feet wet. We'll be targeting a mix of hard-fighting gamefish and tasty table fare, so there's something for everyone. The beach scenery ain't too shabby either, making this trip a feast for the eyes as well as the rod and reel.

What to Expect on the Water

We'll be surf fishing, which means we're casting right from the beach into the rolling waves. It's a blast and a great way to really feel connected to the ocean. Captain Chris will get you set up with the right gear and bait, and show you the tricks to reading the water and spotting where the fish are hanging out. You might be tossing out cut bait for bigger predators or using lighter tackle with sand fleas for the bottom-feeders – it all depends on what's biting that day. The great thing about New Smyrna is the variety. One minute you could be battling a hard-charging jack, the next you're finessing a keeper redfish to shore. And don't worry if you're new to this – Captain Chris has a knack for explaining things in a way that'll have you casting like a pro in no time.

Top Catches This Season

New Smyrna Beach is a fish magnet, and the afternoon bite can be red hot. We're talking about hooking into some serious fighters like blacktip sharks that'll make your drag sing, or chunky black drum that'll give your arms a workout. Redfish are always a crowd-pleaser – they pull hard and taste even better. Bluefish are like little torpedoes, and when they're running, it's non-stop action. For those looking to fill the cooler, whiting are abundant and make for some mighty fine fish tacos. And if you're up for a challenge, try your hand at outsmarting a crafty sheepshead – they're not called "convict fish" for nothing! The best part? You never know what might show up on the end of your line. That's the magic of fishing these waters.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Redfish are the rock stars of inshore fishing around here. These copper-colored beauties can grow up to 40 inches or more, and they've got a set of chompers that can crush crabs and shellfish with ease. Look for their distinctive black spot near the tail – sometimes they've got more than one, which is always a cool catch. Redfish love to cruise the surf zone, especially during the warmer months. When you hook one, be ready for a fight – they're known for making powerful runs and can really put your gear to the test.

Ladyfish might not be the biggest fish in the sea, but pound for pound, they're some of the most fun to catch. These silver speedsters are often called "poor man's tarpon" because of their acrobatic jumps and fast runs. They typically range from 1 to 3 pounds, but what they lack in size, they make up for in energy. Ladyfish are around pretty much year-round, but they really show up in force during the summer months. They're great for anglers of all ages because they're easy to catch and put up a spirited fight.

Crevalle Jack, or "jacks" as we call 'em, are the bulldogs of the beach. These guys are pure muscle and mean business when they hit your line. They typically run in the 5 to 15-pound range, but bigger ones aren't uncommon. Jacks love to hunt in packs, so when you find one, there's usually more nearby. They're most active in the warmer months and love to chase bait schools along the surf. When a jack takes your bait, hold on tight – their initial run is legendary and has caught many an angler off guard!

Bluefish are the piranhas of the Atlantic. These toothy critters are aggressive feeders and will hit just about anything that moves. They range from 2 to 10 pounds typically, with some gators (big ones) pushing 20 pounds or more. Bluefish are seasonal visitors, showing up in big numbers during their spring and fall migrations. They're known for their savage strikes and tendency to snap lines with their razor-sharp teeth. When the blues are running, it's fast and furious fishing that'll keep you on your toes.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

Folks who fish with Captain Chris tend to become regulars, and it's easy to see why. First off, the guy knows his stuff. He's been fishing these waters for years and has a sixth sense for where the fish are biting. But it's not just about catching fish – though you'll do plenty of that. It's about the whole experience. Chris has a way of making everyone feel comfortable, whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned angler. He's patient with beginners, full of tips for the more experienced, and always good for a laugh or a fishing story.

Then there's the setting. New Smyrna Beach is a slice of old Florida heaven. The sand's soft, the water's clear, and the fishing pressure is way less than some of the more touristy spots. You might see dolphins playing in the surf or pelicans diving for bait fish. It's the kind of place that reminds you why you fell in love with fishing in the first place.

And let's not forget the variety. One trip you might be battling bull reds in the surf, the next you're finessing flounder from a trough. There's always something new to try, a different species to target, or a new technique to learn. That's what keeps people coming back – the promise of adventure and the chance to tight lines with good company.

Time to Book Your Spot

If you're itching to feel the salt spray on your face and the pull of a fish on your line, it's time to lock in your date with Reel Healin Outdoors. This 4-hour afternoon trip is the perfect way to scratch that fishing itch without taking up your whole day. Whether you're looking to bend a rod with the family, show your buddies up with a monster catch, or just enjoy some quality time on the water, Captain Chris has got you covered.

Remember, the fish are always biting, but spots on the boat aren't always open. New Smyrna Beach is a hot fishing destination, and for good reason. Don't miss your chance to experience some of the best inshore action Florida has to offer. Grab your sunscreen, your favorite lucky hat, and get ready for an afternoon of reeling, laughing, and making memories. The fish are waiting – are you ready to meet them? Book your trip now and get ready for a reel good time on the water!

Crevalle Jack

Ladyfish are acrobatic fighters that'll keep you on your toes. These skinny silver missiles typically run 1-3 pounds but can hit 5+. You'll find them in the surf, inlets, and backwaters spring through fall. They often school up and feed aggressively on small baitfish. These guys are known for their spectacular leaps and tail-walking runs when hooked. They're not great eating, but they're a blast to catch on light tackle. Ladyfish hit just about any small lure or bait that moves. Try small jigs, spoons, or live shrimp under a popping cork. For non-stop action, look for ladyfish busting bait on the surface, especially around tide changes. They're perfect for getting kids or new anglers hooked on fishing. The strikes are fast and the fights are fun. To maximize your catch, use a light spinning rod with 10-pound test line. A small circle hook will help with quick releases since ladyfish tend to swallow lures. My favorite setup is a 1/4 oz white bucktail jig - reel it fast and hang on!

Crevalle Jack

Ladyfish

Crevalle jacks are bruisers that'll test your tackle and your arms. These powerful fish typically run 5-15 pounds but can reach over 50. You'll find them busting bait schools in the surf, inlets, and nearshore waters spring through fall. Jacks are aggressive predators that love a chase. Look for birds diving on bait - that often means jacks are feeding below. They hit hard and fight even harder with powerful runs. Hang on tight when you hook one! To target these bulldogs, cast silver spoons, topwater plugs, or live bait like mullet or sardines. A fast retrieve often triggers strikes. For a real thrill, try sight-casting to a school with a popper fly. The explosive surface strikes are a blast. Jacks aren't known for good eating, but they're one of the hardest-fighting fish pound-for-pound. For the best action, fish the outgoing tide in late summer when big schools are chasing bait. My go-to lure is a chrome Rat-L-Trap ripped fast.

Ladyfish

Redfish

Bluefish are feisty fighters that'll keep your rod bent. These toothy predators usually run 3-5 pounds but can hit 20+ pounds. Look for them in the surf, inlets, and nearshore waters from late spring through fall. They're aggressive feeders, often churning up the water in feeding frenzies we call "blitzes." That's when the action gets wild. These guys will hit just about any lure or bait that moves. Try casting metal spoons, topwater plugs, or live mullet on a wire leader. Watch for diving birds - that's a good sign bluefish are feeding on bait schools below. Bluefish put up a great fight and are fun to catch, but be careful of those razor-sharp teeth when unhooking them. The smaller ones make good eating when prepared fresh. Personally, I like to smoke the bigger ones. For the best shot at a trophy, fish the incoming tide in the fall when the big ones are fattening up before migration. Chunk fresh mullet or use a popper plug for exciting topwater strikes.
